A letter from the new directors...

Jordi Molas Gallart

Director

Alejandra Boni Aristizábal

Deputy Director

Welcome letter from Director & Deputy Director

From our new appointments as INGENIO Director and Deputy Director we would like to welcome you to this issue of INGENIO’s Newsletter. Part of our management team has changed but the principles that have guided the development of INGENIO will stay the same. The objective to carry out research on innovation, science and societal change that is both relevant and scientifically robust has driven us since INGENIO was created almost 20 years ago. From a small group of hardly half a dozen individuals we have grown to become the largest research centre of its kind in Spain, bringing together more than 40 committed researchers, technicians and administrative staff. This growth, owes to the vision and work of our two previous directors and INGENIO founders, Ignacio Fernández de Lucio and Antonio Gutierrez Gracia. From them we have learnt the importance of building organisations that facilitate and support the work of their researchers, and provide the tools to make of our research the collaborative endeavour it needs to be. Our work requires extensive collaborative arrangements in which researchers from different backgrounds and disciplines, address socially-relevant problems in collaboration with stakeholders. Often, the problems that stand in the way of these collaborations are related to administrative barriers and organisational structures that are ill-suited to the pace and changing nature of our research projects. From our new positions we will focus on fostering organisational practices and structures that will allow us to build on the substantial capacities that our two “parent” organisations (CSIC and UPV) have contributed to INGENIO and in this way continue the process of gradual but sustained expansion that INGENIO has experienced since its creation.

Focus on...

OSIRIS - the Oslo Institute for Research on the Impact of Science - will for the next eight years will study how and under what conditions research may have an impact on society.
OSIRIS is funded by the Research Council of Norway’s ForInnPol programme, it is hosted and led by TIK Centre for Technology, Innovation and Culture at the University of Oslo, and it is carried out in partnership with Statistics Norway (SSB), INGENIO at the Polytechnic University of Valencia and MIOIR at the University of Manchester. Innovación Social Colectiva. Conocimientos y aprendizajes para la transformación social.
We are a multidisciplinary group linked to the Institute for Innovation and Knowledge Management INGENIO (CSIC-Universitat Politècnica de València), who facilitates spaces for communication and co-production of knowledge among different actors. From the university, we try to understand, make visible, co-create, co-implement, share and learn with collective social innovation initiatives. [Read More].

Students 4 Change: Social Entrepreneurship in Academia. S4C.
The recent downturn that has affected the life of many Latin American countries has reshaped its expectations and possibilities of improvement. In this context, the university regains the leading role it once had. Society considers the university as the path to generate innovative strategies that can contribute to social mobility and attend to structural problems. Based on this, the main purpose of this project is to contribute to the betterment of that part of the university curriculum that seeks to promote social innovation and entrepreneurship, understanding them as fruitful avenues for dealing with the main problems affecting the region. Cédric Gossart

Cédric is with us since January 2017 until July 2017. Here is a summary of his experience at the institute, in his own words:

At the end of 2015, I got the green light for a sabbatical visit in the institution of my choice. Such a chance does not materialise very often, so I had to pick the right place! The plan was to use this period as a stepping stone to embark on a new academic adventure involving 3 main characters: Digital technologies, Innovation, and Social (& environmental) progress. I thus naturally chose INGENIO, whose members work both on innovation studies and on social innovation, using a variety of quantitative and qualitative methods, from the perspective of multiple disciplines. From a more personal point of view, since this was going to be a family adventure, it was important for my wife (see her own testimony below…) and I to be able to send our 11 year old son Léo to a French school, so that he could finish the year he started in Paris in the fall of 2016 (thanks to LFVAL). As I am writing these lines listening to Lluís Llach, I think of all the results I could achieve thanks to the excellent work environment provided by INGENIO (for follow ups, cf. the INESS Blog). These would not have existed without the help of Pablo d’Este and Jordi Molas Gallart who facilitated this adventure. Many thanks to both of them! Most pages of the book of this academic adventure remain to be written, but there is no doubt that INGENIO will be part of it. Last but not least, besides the friendly lunches in the INGENIO kitchen, an Homo laptopus like me could only enjoy the regular self-organised social events, some of which would probably qualify as social innovations such as the famous “foot-beer” gathering… Long live INGENIO! Cédric Gossart is Associate Professor at Télécom École de Management (Institut Mines-Télécom).

Müge Ozman

Müge is with us since January 2017 until July 2017. Here is a summary of her experience at the institute, in her own words:

I came to Valencia on a (exceptionally) cold winter day, but could hardly care about the cold, as I was delighted with the blossoming orange trees throughout the city. When I started working in INGENIO, it became obvious that orange trees were not the only gift the city had to offer… Besides an appealing work environment, my sabbatical visit in INGENIO was enriched with a very friendly atmosphere, not to mention many stimulating discussions on networks and social innovation with colleagues, as well as truly engaging research seminars. I thank especially Jordi Molas Gallart and Pablo d’Este for their help in the process.
