In line with its commitment to the next generation of scholars, INGENIO is pleased to announce the Eu-Spri Forum Early Career Researcher Conference (ECC): "Science, Innovation and the University: keys to social impact",a three-day event organized by INGENIO’S doctoral students. The event aims at providing an enriching experience for early career researchers working on a wide range of Science, Technology and Innovation Policy issues. One purpose of the PhD Days is to contribute to the development of research capacities and skills. Moreover, participants will be offered an opportunity to share experiences and knowledge and build networks among a new generation of researchers, as well as developing their presentation and communication skills. 

This edition of the INGENIO PhD Days will focus on how science, technology and innovation policies and practices are evolving to tackle the many challenges our societies face. Every actor in our innovation systems is subjected to pressures for change; we will discuss the nature of these pressures, and how key organizations like firms, universities and civil society groups interact: new forms of knowledge generation, modern ways of science and technology communication, stressing collaboration among all stakeholders in science and innovation activities; as well as grassroots organizations and their approaches to innovation. All these emerging dynamics offer opportunities for innovative research and challenges for policy development. 

Topics

The conference will be organised into five main lines. Paper submissions are invited that address any of the following:

Track 1. Knowledge Exchange and co-creation

This topic focuses on the changing practices of collaboration and knowledge exchange and the new management and policy problems they pose. The themes include but are not limited to (1) new models of research collaboration, (2) new forms of research data sharing and data reuse, and (3) ethical issues in knowledge, information and data sharing

Track 2. Firms: innovation management in transition | Firms: which interactions matter for innovation?

Firms are making substantial and systematic efforts to access and use new knowledge and skills and to establish their competitive position as societal claims for sustainability and social responsibility increase. We will consider papers exploring how firms are (1) facing the challenges of environmental impact reduction, (2) engaging in new product and service development pathways, and (3) establishing new forms of inter-organizational cooperation for innovation.

Track 3. Social Innovations and Transformations to Sustainability

Social Innovation (SI) literature refers to finding acceptable progressive solutions that contribute positively to human progress while Grassroots Innovation (GI) refers to the initiatives of activists and organisations that lead to bottom-up solutions to local concerns. We will consider submissions that explore (1) the roles that SI and GI play not only in promoting sustainable development but also global consciousness and citizenship, (2) the strategies, opportunities and limitations in the development of SI and GI initiatives, and (3) the linkage of SI and GI with social justice issues.

Track 4. The Future of the University and Higher Education

This line will analyse the challenges that Higher Education Institutions (HEI) and research organizations (ROs) are facing and how they are reacting to them. Papers can address both the organisational changes in HEIs, and their impact on society. Topics can include (1) the way in which HEIs and ROs are reconceptualising quality and excellence and using these concepts in their management activities and institutional designs, (2) how new training and teaching offerings are being developed and the implications of this for European universities, (3) how universities position themselves facing both broadening set of potential missions and the evolution of educational objectives aimed at empowering students to become engaged citizens.

Paper sessions will be chaired by experienced senior researchers who will lead the debate and provide individual feedback. In addition, distinguished scholars will share their experiences on the communication of research results, and workshops will be held to discuss research methods and other issues related to the topics of the conference.

At the end of the event, a prize will be awarded to the most innovative and promising work presented during the 2016 INGENIO PhD Days.

Important: Each presenter is given 15 minutes to present their work and 15 minutes for discussion. Each session participant should comment on the paper following straight after to his/her own presentation. The last presenter will provide comments to the first paper. After each presentation the student will comment first for 5 minutes, followed by a senior Discussant (5 minutes) and then comments from the audience (5 minutes).

Extended deadline for abstract submission: 26 February 2016
Deadline for abstract submission: 15 February 2016
Decision of abstract acceptance: 29 February 2016
Deadline for fullpapers: 20 March 2016
Deadline for registration fees: 31 March 2016

 

Potential participants are invited to submit an extended abstract (1.500 words approx.) attached to phdays@ingenio.upv.es  no later than 15th February 2016. Abstracts will be in English and include:

1. a brief description of the main objectives of research
2. research questions in relation to the relevant literature
3. methods of analysis and data (where it applies)
4. main findings or expected results.

Those PhD students, whose abstracts are accepted, will be also required to submit a full paper (around 5000 words) three weeks before the Conference (20th March 2016)

The fee is €80 (€0 Eu-SPRI members), and can be paid via the website https://goo.gl/wbw5zG available from 9th March to 30th March 2016. The fee includes coffee-breaks and lunches (14-15 April 2016), as well as a conference dinner (14 April 2016). Strict cancelation policy: No refund of fees.
