How do associations use digital technologies to contribute to sustainability transitions? This paper analyses the digital practices of French associations specialised in Environmental and Sustainable Development Education (ESDE). Based on an exploratory study of the cases of 13 associations through semi-structured interviews, it first explores the digital tools they use to operate on a daily basis. In a second stage, we analyse their digital practices when carrying out ESDE activities. To identify digital ESDE practices, we use social practice theory according to which a practice emerges when performed through the combination of three elements: Material, Competence, and Meaning. Our study identifies 131 digital practices and discusses their respective contribution to first and second order learning. We also underline the benefits of interdisciplinary research, in this case using a sociological concept to shed light on how organisations can address grand challenges.
