The Handbook of Universities and Regional Development, edited by Attila Varga and Katalin Erdös, provides a compilation of some remarkable studies that seek to understand the contribution of universities to regional development. Although the role of universities in the formation of high-technology clusters and regional growth has been well documented, the aim of this handbook is to broaden the focus and provide a comprehensive view of the multiple interactions between universities and the regions in which they are embedded. It explicitly considers that these relations are contingent on historical paths, institutional and spatial specificities, and various mechanisms enabling knowledge exchange between universities and local actors.
