In a recent paper published in Research Policy, Mabel Sanchez Barrioluengo fleshes out important limitations in the ‘one-size-fits-all’ framework that is commonly used to study University missions, i.e. Teaching, Research and Social Engagement.Her study on the Spanish Higher Education system shows that the three missions stand to one another in relations of substitution and complementarity that had barely been considered before. The challenges that emerge from this work are relevant beyond the context at hand. The portal Research Europe recently asked Mabel to further elaborate on her findings in an article that is accessible for free through the Research website.

More recently Prof. Paul Benneworth, who is a regular visitor of our Institute (see details about his recent seminar a few weeks ago, picked up this topic in a recent entry in Regional Science Early Career Route at the Regional Studies Association Blog.
